The narrative scene on the present lot is taken
from the dramatic work ‘The Generals of the
Yang Family’ written and added to throughout
the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. It depicts
a legendary moment during the Northern
Song Dynasty when, after all the men had
been slaughtered by the Khitan invaders, the
women of the Yang family took up arms and
bravely galloped out to meet the enemy.

water fowl amongst densely flowering, leafy
lotus stems, the reverse inscribed with a
poem, the shoulder with four blossom sprays
on a leafy, whorl pattern ground. 18.5cm
