CHI CHEONG [aka: CHICHEONG] [Silversmith’s real believed to be CHI CHENG]
            Canton & Hong Kong
            circa 1890-1940

This mark [left] appears on a single item of silver. “AH” is a mark for
a Yogya silversmith operating in Java in what is now Jakarta
[Yogyakarta]. What looks like “BOO” is actually “800”, the silver
                                                  purity of Yogya silver.

Chi Cheong was retail silversmith; it is not sure if it was also a
manufacturing silversmith. The mark appears on a Foo pin [below].
                                                  This pin and marks is
                                                  often seen in auctions.

It is still a mystery why the two marks appear together. There
isn’t any logic to a Hong Kong silversmith making a small pin
in Java. There isn’t too much logic to a Javanese silversmith
importing a Foo pin and a Hong Kong maker marking it as
800 silver. There is an uncanny similarity to the planished
ground of the pin and the Chi Cheong box [below].
