The mark [right] appears on this tankard [below]
which is unusually decorated with crabstock handle
and raised thistle decorative motif. It is well-
documented there was a significant involvement in
the China Trade at Canton by Scottish merchants -
this could well have been a special commission for
one such merchant.
What is essentially a card case [above right] takes on a slight twist in the addition of a shoulder chain. Whether
the chain is a later adaption will remain a mystery; it could have been used by a traditionally dressed Chinese
gentleman who hung it within his clothing, for example.
