The detailing of the bamboo
culmes rooted into the ground
belong to a Gothic K goblet
[following illustration]. Using
three bamboo stems to support
a goblet became a highly
traditional form in Chinese
silversmithing. The exposing of
roots and showing the stems to
be planted on a mound is also
rich in allegorical significance.
