SHENG YUAN [aka: SHENG YUEN]
Peking [Bei Jing]
circa 1885-1940
This Peking Sheng Yuan has no connection with the other catalogued Peking Sheng Yuan !aka
Peking Silver Store.
Admittedly this is confusing, but the styles of the two retail silversmiths are very different; I would go as far as
to say this Sheng Yuan silver is of superior quality to its Beijing namesake - in both quality of workmanship and
styling. In particular, items with figural scenes are literally
like reading a picture book. The two details [below] of
panels appearing on a Sheng Yuan teapot are quite
extraordinary - the panels depict “food gathering” of
various types including the tree shrews amongst a
fruiting vine and the gardener in the kitchen garden being
observed.
