SHENG YUAN [aka: SHENG YUAN LOU; PEKING SILVER TEMPLE]
            4, Silver Street, Peking
349, Yates Road, International Settlement, Shanghai
            circa 1885-1940

‘Peiping Office’: Peiping is the Wades-
            Giles romanisation of the Mandarin
            pronunciation of the Nationalist name
            for Beijing.
Silver Street in Chienmen was actually
the heart of the old Legation Compound
which was in close vicinity to the gate to
the Forbidden City [a gate that was
destroyed in the Boxer Rebellion seige].

Silver caged Haig Dimple whisky bottles were a popular Chinese Export
Silver item from the launch of the Dimple bottle in the mid 1890’s by Haig of
Scotland. Where and how an amber red bottle came from is a mystery -
although red was the house colour of Haig Whisky.

It probably would make this Sheng Yuan version somewhat of a collectors’
                                           item.

This Sheng Yuan pepperette circa 1910 is
quite typical of the smaller type of item this
                                           retail silversmith created and sold.
