Page 879 - Chinese SIlver By Adrien Von Ferscht
P. 879
WONG CHEOONG
52 Old China Street, Canton
circa 1850-1895
No maker’s mark image has been found for this silversmith but documentation
exists for the existence of this retail silversmith at the above address.
This is a silversmith that has puzzled
every researcher that has studied
Chinese Export Silver since the 1960s.
While John Kernan referred to it in his
Chait Collection catalogue with the
boxed filigree card case [below],
recently another similar label [right]
came to light - but no object and
consequently still no silver mark.
Filigree card cases, more often than not,
did not carry any silver mark.
Forthcoming research of mine
will aim to create a map of Old
China Street and New China
Street in old Canton that will
show individual retail
silversmiths and their
respective addresses.
Hopefully, this may help solve
the ongoing mystery of the
identity of Wong Cheoong.
