    A PAIR OF ZITAN INCENSE STANDS, XIANGJI
    LATE 18TH-EARLY 19TH CENTURY

    The square top is raised on a narrow waist carved with archaistic
    dragon scroll above the shaped apron carved with dragons
    confronting a faming pearl. The whole is raised on thick legs of
    square section terminating in hoof feet and set into a square base
    stretcher raised on small tab feet.

    A pair of shorter zitan incense stands (75.2 cm. high), with thumb-grooved
    edge and hoof feet, from the Robert H. Ellsworth Collection, was sold at
    Christie’s New York, 18 March 2015, lot 147. See, also, another pair of
    square zitan stands (84 cm. high), elaborately carved with endless knots on
    the tall waist and carved aprons, illustrated in the catalogue Zitan: The Most
    Noble Hardwood, My Humble House Publications, Taipei, 1996, pp. 144-45.
