OPENWORK PLAQUE

YUAN-EARLY MING DYNASTY, 13TH-15TH
CENTURY
The rectangular plaque is shaped with
canted corners, finely carved in openwork
and layered relief with a bearded figure of
foreign appearance holding a chain tied to a
ferocious mythical lion with its head turned
back to face the figure among blossoming
branches on foliate scroll grounds.

Compare with a jade plaque dated to the
Yuan dyansty in the Palace Museum, Beijing
depicting a very similar scene illustrated
in Jadeware (II), The Complete Collection of
Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong
1995, p. 172, no. 143 where it mentions that this
pattern featuring the lion was only permitted to
be worn by military officers of the 1st rank.

‘CHRYSANTHEMUM’ BOWL
QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
The delicately carved bowl is formed with
thin rounded sides rising from a floral-
shaped foot to a slightly everted mouth rim,
and flanked by a pair of S-shaped foliate
handles. It is decorated in low relief around
the exterior with a central band of stylised
chrysanthemum blooms enclosed within
ruyi-shaped cartouches, all between further
borders containing U-shaped flowers. The
semi-translucent stone is of a light green
tone suffused with darker speckles.
