PAINTED IN COLOURS OVER THE GLAZE. 219

back is really the best part of this piece, the front being but
sparingly decorated by two paoonies and some small flowers
from a blue enamel rock, while a flutters
      springing butterfly
above, all roughly drawn. Behind, the sides are covered with
a ruby-coloured enamel, the base, as usual in eggshell, being-
left uncoloured. The pink on this, as also the previous dish,
is a rose-pink, free from all trace of blue.
                                              "

                              in blue, with a music
      eggshell porcelain, painted lady playing
at a table, an attendant, vases, etc., blue scroll border. Diameter,
      8§ inches."
This is a rare as these are
                   very piece, eggshell plates
                                            blue over the
seldom found in monochrome, particularly glaze.
The gentleman playing the flute seems to be in the old style
of dress, but his surroundings are much the same as in the
eo-o-shell with mandarin figures. We have the bird on a ring-
perch and incense burner with vase containing shovel and
                       A vase contains a or
      chopstick tongs. rectangular joo-e,
             of while and are on
      sceptre longevity, peaches pomegranates
a stand to the back. There is a similar plate to this in the
Grandidier collection in Paris, as also one in polychrome.

      Diameter, 8f inches."
These two show the of the decoration
                   pieces great diversity
      to be met with on
