A GOLD-SPLASHED BRONZE TRIPOD CENSER
17TH-18TH CENTURY
The censer has a compressed body raised on three legs and a pair of pierced and curved upright handles
that fank the short neck and fat, everted rim. The exterior is decorated overall with fne gold splashes
that also cover the base surrounding an apocryphal Xuande six-character mark cast within a rectangle.
6 in. (15.1 cm.) wide across handles
$5,000-7,000
PROVENANCE
Private collection, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France.
Whilst related bronze censers, richly splashed with gold and cast with Xuande marks on the base,
are known, the present censer appears to be particularly unusual for its curving, upturned handles.
For related examples with animal-mask handles and with loop handles, see R. Kerr, Later Chinese
Bronzes, London, 1990, p. 27, no. 15.
