A GREY POTTERY FIGURE
OF A DIGNITARY
WESTERN WEI DYNASTY (AD 535-556)
The fgure is shown standing on a rectangular
base, his raised right hand hollowed to hold a
now missing object, and wearing ‘leather’ armor
strapped over a heavy tunic with stif collar, and
long, loose trousers. There are traces of white slip,
and orangish-red and black pigment.

This fgure is stylistically similar to a group of
fgures found in Shaanxi province and dated to
the Western Wei dynasty, some of which were
included in the exhibition, The Quest for Eternity,
Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1987, pp. 80
and 125, nos. 53-54.
