A RUSSET-SPLASHED
BLACKISH-BROWN-GLAZED JAR
NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY,
12TH CENTURY
The globular body is covered on the exterior with a
lustrous blackish-brown glaze decorated in matte
russet ‘partridge feather’ markings and pools in
an irregular line on the lower body exposing the
buf-colored ware. The interior is covered with a
thin wash of blackish-brown glaze and the top of
the rim is unglazed.

A YAOZHOU RUSSET-
BROWN-GLAZED DEEP BOWL
JIN DYNASTY, 12TH-13TH CENTURY
The body of deep U-shape is covered inside and
out with slightly metallic glaze of russet-brown
color that shades to a darker tone below the
unglazed rim, the glaze on the exterior falling
irregularly over a russet-brown slip that is wiped
clean at the edge of the foot, and the glaze on the
interior ending at the bottom of the walls above
the unglazed center.
