A FINELY DECORATED
BLUE AND WHITE SLEEVE VASE
TRANSITIONAL PERIOD, CIRCA 1640
The vase is well decorated around the sides
with scholars in a mountain retreat, with three
scholars in pavilions on stilts at the side of a river
in which two fgures in boats are seen, and a fourth
scholar seated on a rocky outcropping looking at
a waterfall in the distance, all below two incised
double lines and pendent leaves on the neck.

A very similar vase from a private collection is
illustrated by J. Curtis in Chinese Porcelains of
the Seventeenth Century, Landscapes, Scholars’
Motifs and Narratives, New York, 1995, pp. 48-49,
no. 4. This comparable vase is decorated with a
landscape with very similar treatment of the rocks
to the present vase, and has a similar indentation
on the center of the base. It also bears a poetic
inscription with the date 1639.
