A RARE ‘IMITATION BRONZE’ PAINTED POTTERY TRIPOD CENSER
QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
清 陶仿銅饕餮紋雙耳三足爐
The unusual censer is modelled after the archaic bronze tripod vessel, ding, with two upright loop handles
rising from the mouth rim. The exterior of the body is decorated with a band of three taotie masks, reserved
on a leiwen ground. The vessel is painted overall in various shades of green and blue to simulate the
malachite and azurite encrustations which are characteristic of archaic bronzes.
