A RARE LARGE BRONZE INSCRIBED JARDINIÈRE
DATED BY INSCRIPTION TO THE 30TH YEAR OF THE QIANLONG PERIOD,
CORRESPONDING TO 1765
清乾隆三十年 (1765年) 鑄銅西湖十景詩文大花盆
The sturdy vessel is crisply cast to the exterior to depict an open foliate hand scroll
containing four large characters reading Zhi guo chan si, ‘the Temple of Zhi Guo Chan’. The
long inscription with smaller characters describes the famous Ten Views of the West Lake
in Hangzhou, ending with the characters Xu Gengxin ti, ‘inscribed by Xu Gengxin’. The
inscriptions are all below a key-fret border encircling the mouth. A band of endless knots,
fower blooms and shou characters above a lappet border surround the lower section of the
exterior. There are three apertures to the base of the vessel, and one side of the interior has a
panel containing a further inscription reading Qianlong san shi nian dong yu ji ri Hangzhou hu
shui Shen Detai zao, which may be translated as ‘Made by Shen Detai from Hangzhou Hushui,
on an auspicious day in the winter month of the 30th year of the Qianlong period’.
