A FINELY CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER CIRCULAR BOX
AND COVER
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

清乾隆 剔紅神仙圖圓蓋盒

The top of the cover is exquisitely carved with a circular panel enclosing an
idyllic walled garden scene, depicting a bearded immortal holding a long staf,
accompanied by four attendants. He approaches a pavilion where two other
immortals await him, surrounded by trees and rocks. Tall peaks emerging from
scrolling clouds are visible in the far distance. The sides of the cover and the
box are intricately decorated with panels of foral sprays, interspersed with the
Eight Buddhist Emblems, bajixiang.
