A BRONZE ‘ELEPHANT’ TRIPOD CENSER
AND COVER
17TH-18TH CENTURY
清十七/十八世紀 銅鏤雕蓮紋三象足蓋爐
The censer is cast in relief with leafy lotus scrolls fanked
by a pair of handles in the form of elephant heads with their
trunks raised. The body is supported on three elephant heads,
with their curved trunks forming the legs. The openwork
cover is decorated with lotus blooms borne on leafy tendrils
surrounding the fnial which is cast as a recumbent elephant
carrying a bowl flled with precious objects on its back.

The heavily cast, compressed globular body is raised on
three feet and set with a pair of loop handles. There is a four
character apocryphal Xuande mark to the base.
