A PAINTED ENAMEL ‘EUROPEAN SUBJECT’ SNUFF BOTTLE A GREEN-GROUND FAMILLE ROSE ‘CAT AND BUTTERFLY’
20TH CENTURY INSCRIBED SNUFF BOTTLE
QIANLONG FOUR-CHARACTER MARK IN IRON-RED AND OF THE
清二十世紀 銅胎畫琺瑯西洋仕女圖鼻煙壺 PERIOD (1736-1795)
The snuf bottle is colourfully enamelled with two cartouches depicting 清乾隆 粉彩戲蝶詩文鼻煙壺
European fgures in pastoral scenes, set against a yellow ground with stylised
foral scrolls. The base bears an apocryphal Qianlong four-character mark in 刻文:「撇蕊飯幽露/手摘濕冷冷/即此供吟賞/河勞餐洛英 」
blue enamel. The gilt-bronze stopper is decorated with a foliate design.
One side of the bottle is delicately painted with a panel depicting a cat amidst
2¡ in. (6 cm.) high three large foral blooms, looking up towards a butterfy in fight. The panel to
the reverse is decorated with a long poetic inscription, followed by a seal mark

The long inscription contains a poem which describes and eulogises the
beauty of fowers and dew drops. It is followed by the characters Qianlong yu
ti, ‘imperial composition by the Qianlong Emperor’.
Compare the present lot to a moulded snuf bottle in the Palace Museum in
Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures from the Palace
Museum - 47 - Snuf Bottles, Hong Kong, 2003, p. 210, pl. 320.
