AN INSIDE-PAINTED AMBER GLASS ‘CHANGMEI’ SNUFF BOTTLE
WANG XISAN, DATED BY INSCRIPTION TO THE EARLY WINTER OF THE CYCLICAL YEAR OF
YISI, CORRESPONDING TO 1965

琥珀內畫羅漢圖鼻煙壺 王習三作於1965年

The snuf bottle is delicately painted to the interior on one side with a scene showing the luohan Changmei
seated on a circular straw mat before a tall brazier. An inscription above identifes the fgure, with a small
oval seal reading yin for ‘seal’. The reverse depicts Bodhidharma seated before a pile of books and reading
one of the texts. An inscription above identifes the fgure and provides the date and signature of the artist.
The inscription is preceded by a seal reading zun, ‘respect’ and is followed by a seal reading Xisan. A large
rocky outcrop with bamboo is painted on one narrow side and separates the two scenes. The jadeite
stopper is plainly carved.
