AN ARCHAISTIC WHITE JADE TWO-HANDLED VASE AND COVER
19TH CENTURY
清十九世紀 白玉饕餮紋雙象耳活環蓋瓶
The vase is of fattened form and carved in low relief to the body with a central band of taotie between two
bands of chrysanthemum petals. Each handle is carved in the form of an elephant head with loose rings,
and the cover is carved and pierced with a coiled chilong-form fnial. The stone is of a very pale tone with
some minor faint streaky inclusions.

From an important private Asian collection.
It is rare to fnd vessels of this size using such pure and even stones in white jade. See a large white jade
vase and cover of a very similar shape sold in Christies Hong Kong, 27 May 2008, lot 1955.
