                                                          A CARVED AMBER SNUFF BOTTLE
                                                          1800-1880

                                                          The body is carved in high relief with two birds perched in a prunus
                                                          tree growing from rocks on one side, and a bear watching an eagle
                                                          perched in the branches of a pine tree on the reverse.
                                                          3 in. (7.5 cm.) high, glass stopper

                                                          The combination of eagle (ying) and bear (xiong) provides the rebus
                                                          yingxiong, meaning ‘champion’ or ‘hero’.
