A LARGE GILT AND IRON-RED-DECORATED PORCELAIN SNUFF BOTTLE
IMPERIAL, JINGDEZHEN KILNS, JIAQING SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARK IN IRON-RED WITHIN A DOUBLE
SQUARE AND OF THE PERIOD (1796-1820)

The tall, ovoid body is decorated around the sides with a lengthy gilt inscription, The Chinese
Code of Success: Maxims by Zhu Zi, followed by two iron-red seals, between gilt and iron-red
borders of petal lappets below and ruyi heads above.
3º in. (8.3 cm.) high, glass stopper

The inscription is an article written by Zhu Bolu (Zhu Zi [1627-1698]), a Ming dynasty scholar. It was
meant as instructions to his own descendants, but has become a guide for further generations of
Chinese in their conduct at home, at the workplace, and in society.
