SNUFF BOTTLE
Wang Xisan, 1971, the bottle: 1780-1880
The rounded rectangular bottle rested on a
splayed oval foot, deftly painted to the interior
of each main side with a scholar and a young
boy in a lush garden, or in an enchanted
landscape setting, one side with an
inscription matching the scene, dated xinhai
(1971), signed Xisan, with One Bottle Studio
name, one red seal mark reading Xisan.
(2 3/4in (7cm) high).
$3,000 - 5,000
Many of of Wang Xisan’s finest works date
from the 1960’s to the early 1970’s. Although
they were created at an early stage of Wang’s
career, his artistic ability was already honed to
a very fine degree.
It is not unusual to find Wang Xisan’s early
works being executed on fine old bottles
during the late 1950’s to 1970’s, when fine
old crystal, chalcedony, and amber bottles
were available but not quite marketable. For
another inside-painted rock crystal bottle
by Wang Xisan, dated 1964, see Moss,
Graham, Tsang, The Art of the Chinese
Snuff Bottle. The J & J Collection, vol. II,
pp. 731-732, no, 449.
