           the period, her under-kimono and obi sash tie-dyed in the kanoko shibori
           technique, her outer kimono richly embroidered or dyed with a bold floral
           pattern, her white make-up rendered in delicate gofun, signed and sealed

           One of the most accomplished female painters of her time, in 1916, Shima
           Seien formed the Onna Yonin no Kai (Four-Woman Society) with three other
           promising and ambitious young women: Kitani Chigusa, Okamoto Kōen,

           painting of a night heron by Gaho); inscription inside by Mizuta Chikuho
           (Nanga painter, 1883-1958) dated mid-February 1930
