woman in formal attire holding a black Raku-ware tea
bowl, her outer kimono embroidered with blossoms,
signed at lower right Shinsui ga (Painted by Shinsui) and
sealed

Seated Courtesan
Showa (1926-1989) or Heisei (1989-2019) era, late
20th/early 21st century
Unmounted painting, ink, colors, and gold on paper,
depicting a late Edo-period (1615-1868) courtesan in
traditional attire and hairstyle, seated at a table by a
folding screen of irises, willow, stream, and gold clouds,
signed and sealed at lower right Haruyo

Morita Haruyo worked as a kimono painter until 1972
before turning to depictions of women in traditional
costumes and settings throughout Japanese history.
Now based in Australia, she has exhibited in London,
the United States, and Saudi Arabia.
