A BLUE-GROUND GAUZE SILK ‘NINE-
DRAGON’ ROBE, JIFU
19th century
The blue silk gauze worked in couched gold
thread and fine counted stitch with nine
five-clawed dragons pursuing flaming pearls
amidst trailing clouds interspersed with bats,
cranes, wondrous pavilions and the Eight
Buddhist Emblems above a terrestrial diagram
and lishui stripe separated by ruyi clouds, with
similar decoration repeated on the border,
collar and horsehoof cuffs. 137.5cm (54 1/8in)
long.

Late Qing Dynasty
The garment with central split, embroidered in
480 gold thread with nine dragons among woven
ruyi-clouds, cranes and Buddhist symbols, all
above a tall lishui band at the hem, with black
gauze hem embroidered with dragons at the
collar and horse-shoe cuffs.

Woven in gilt thread with writhing dragons
amongst scattered auspicious emblems,
above crashing waves and a gilt lishui
border; and two reference books: ‘Chinese
Potpourri’, James Zee-Min Lin, 1950, The
Oriental Publishers, Hong Kong, with signed
dedication by the author; and ‘My Country
and My People’, Lin YuTang, published 1939.
