Learn to see the small shapes as falling on an invisible grid, so that you're continually lining them up both vertically and horizontally to determine where to place them. When the outline of the figure is complete and you're sure that everything is correct, erase all guidelines and other unnecessary marks, then move on to shading. Remember as you shade to always follow the natural contours of the object. Begin with a mid-range pencil (2B or so) and lay down some graphite beginning in the darkest place and working your way out toward the light. See the shadows as shapes falling on the figure and put them down in large pieces, keeping your strokes as smooth as possible for a realistic effect. When the first pass of shading is done, blend the tone smooth with as large a tool as possible for the area. Page 6 of 37
