After the first blending pass, add the darker parts of the features such as the iris and pupil, eyelashes, nostrils, and corners of the mouth. You will also need to darken the shadows on the hair and in the folds of the clothing. Blend each pass of graphite smooth after laying it down, using a more delicate touch for the second and third passes so that you don't pick up so much tone as you did the first time. You may need to downgrade to a smaller blending tool to work in the eyes, nose, ears, and mouth. Work this way until you're satisfied, saving the small detail work (such as texture and patterns in the clothing, fly-away hairs on the head, cracks in the lips and so on) for last. Don't forget to take breaks and step away from the work every now and then; twenty minutes or so is usually a good time to at least stand up and view it from a different vantage point. Page 9 of 37
