Castle named top Hawai'i hospital in Lown Institute Hospitals Index
The Lown Institute’s Hospitals Index that was released July 7, ranked Adventist Health Castle #1 in the state of Hawaii and 25th in the nation. The Lown Institutes is a health care think tank founded by world-renowned cardiologist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Bernard Lown.
This new index honors hospitals for both excellence in serving individual patients and for our contributions to advancing equity in our communities. The Institute is the first to include metrics like Inclusivity, Pay Equity, Avoiding Overuse, and Civic Leadership in evaluating hospital performance.
Adventist Health Castle has been named a top hospital by Lown in the following three lists:
• Top 50 Hospitals in the Nation
• #1 Hospital in Hawaii
• Top 10 Hospitals for Quality of Care in
the Nation
The Lown Institute, which is nonpartisan and based in Brookline, Mass., assessed almost 3,300 hospitals nationwide for its current Hospitals Index that measures more than just patient health outcomes and recognized Adventist Health Castle for outstanding work.
The index rolls up scores from three categories, seven sub-components and 42 detailed metrics to provide a unique and holistic ranking of hospital performance.
The hospitals on the Lown ranking earned high marks in civic leadership by showing a commitment to diversity, inclusion and
community health. Hospitals received high value of care grades based on low use
of unnecessary services. Quality of care metrics evaluated patient safety and health outcomes.
These three pillars, along with data from the Internal Revenue Service, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Securities and Exchange Commission, culminated in the ranking of hospitals.
