Ukraine has enough electricity from nuclear power plants. The total capacity of the power units from nuclear power plants connected to the power system provides the necessary amount of electricity for the country's needs, announced Energoatom. As of May 23, all operating nuclear power plants in Ukraine are stably producing electricity. Energoatom reminds that the Zaporizhzhya NPP and the city of Energodar are still occupied and controlled by the Russian military. At the same time, all ZNPP power units are serviced by Ukrainian personnel and work for the needs of Ukraine. It is noted that the invaders do not interfere in the station's work, but all technical decisions of the staff are forced to align with their military forces.
Ukraine will build five nuclear power units together with Westinghouse.
State Enterprise Energoatom and the American company Westinghouse continue to work on constructing new AP-1000 power units at Ukrainian NPPs, said the head of Energoatom, Petro Kotin. "We have signed very high-level documents with Westinghouse about constructing our five power units. We will build five power units in total under the AP-1000 project," Kotin said. He clarified that two power units are planned to be built at the Khmelnytskyi NPP and the remaining systems at other nuclear power plants.
Energoatom will purchase nuclear fuel from Westinghouse worth $50M.
“Ukraine State Enterprise Energoatom has raised a UAH 1.5B ($50M) loan from Ukrgasbank to buy fuel from the US company Westinghouse in 2022. The company plans to use borrowed funds to increase the purchase of American fuel and ensure the efficient operation of Ukrainian nuclear power units after the abandonment of Russian nuclear fuel," the NNEGC said in a statement. According to Energoatom, at the beginning of a full-scale Russian military aggression, the company abandoned purchases of Russian-made nuclear fuel. Currently, Energoatom is the operator of all four operating nuclear power plants in Ukraine.
The EBRD will allocate €50M to Ukrenergo for support liquidity. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Ukrainian authorities have agreed on repurposing part of an existing loan to Ukrenergo, the country’s electricity transmission company, to provide €50M of emergency liquidity. The aim is to keep the lights on in a country whose economy has been hard hit by February’s invasion by Russia. The EBRD President, Odile Renaud-Basso, said: “This EBRD support to the Ukrainian electricity company is vital to help maintain citizens' everyday access to vital services. It is more important than ever to keep the real economy working.” The EBRD will support other vital operations in the coming weeks, particularly in addressing the liquidity needs of Ukraine’s railway and pharmaceutical sectors. The EBRD has pledged to invest €1B this year in supporting the Ukrainian economy with donors and partners.
