pipeline this year – in its latest update, Reuters cited sources familiar with the matter sharing KazTransOil’s plans to transport 200,000 tonnes of oil to Germany in December, up from initial plans of exporting 100,000 tonnes. A continued ramp-up in the export of oil via the Druzhba pipeline could be potentially anticipated in 2024.
Amid disruptions in oil exports via the CPC pipeline, Kazakhstan is
reportedly holding negotiations on expanding its supplies via the under-utilised Adria pipeline that runs through Croatia.
Troubles with ageing infrastructure
Kazakhstan is experiencing ongoing troubles with ageing Soviet-era infrastructure. The country has already experienced troubles this winter with shutdowns at power and heating plants. This cyclical problem has become especially prevalent since last year, when the city of Ekibastuz experienced a major power outage, leaving homes without heating for a week in temperatures of around minus-30 degree Celsius.
There is a possibility of Kazakh authorities paying more attention to the issue of weakening infrastructure in 2023, in view of the growing amount of public and media focus on the topic.
