SCHOLARSHIP METHODOLOGY
In 1993, the Executive Board of the Sports Club created a point system to determine scholarship recipients. The point system is based on the student-athlete’s athletic and academic accomplishments.
The process begins when an athlete is nominated by a coach for excelling in a particular sport. Coaches are asked to nominate up to three deserving senior athletes.
Once nominated, points are earned for team participation,
5 points for each year of participation per sport (JV and Varsity), with a maximum of 60 points earned if nominated in three sports.
In addition, points are awarded for each athletic award earned:
All American 8 points; Honorable Mention (H.M.) All American 7 points; All State 6 points; H.M. All State 5 points; All Section 4 points; H.M. All Section 3 points;
All League 2 points and H.M All League 1 point.
This is the cumulative total for the nominees’ athletic career.
Final athletic points are earned based on
the coach’s rating of the nominee on five qualities:
Sportsmanship, Teamwork, Work Ethic, Motivation and Attitude.
The rating is on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the highest. The total amount of points earned in the five qualities is then multiplied by 1.5.
The nominee’s name is then submitted to the Guidance Department. Points for academics are earned based upon the student’s GPA.
For example, a student with a 92 GPA would earn 92 points.
In addition, academic points are earned based upon a Guidance Department rating on five academic qualities:
Respect for School, Respect for Others, Work Ethic, Motivation and Attitude. The total amount of points earned in the five academic
qualities is then added to the GPA.
The athletic and academic points are combined for a point total. Scholarships are awarded to those students with the highest point totals. Students and their families must meet Sports Club membership requirements to be eligible for any awards.
