DOMINIC A. CECERE SCHOLARSHIP
Presented by EHS Baseball Alumni & Friends
Dom Cecere worked as a teacher in the Eastchester schools for 38 years. For 34 of those years, he was the Director of Athletics and District Coordinator of Physical Education. He was the manager of the Varsity Baseball team for 52 years. Coach Cecere guided his teams to a New York State record 737 wins.
Coach Cecere was honored with the National High School Baseball Coach of the Year, the Frank Maguire Foundation Award for Coaching Excellence, Westchester Coach of the Year for Baseball (9 times), Westchester Coach of the Year for Gymnastics, and induction to the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, and the Westchester County Hall of Fame. His baseball teams won 18 league championships, 6 sectional championships, and a regional title.
Coach Cecere would be the first to tell you that his honors were made possible because of the values and efforts instilled in his student athletes by their families, their teachers and coaches, and the community of Eastchester. He believed that competing the right way was a transformative experience for his players to learn lessons that will serve them for the rest of their lives. The Dominic A. Cecere Scholarship Award celebrates the effort necessary to achieve excellence both on the field and in the classroom. In the name of Coach Cecere, this award recognizes the member of the Varsity Baseball Team who best reflects the ideals of student, classmate, athlete, and teammate.
MARIE ASTARITA SCHOLARSHIP
Presented by Marie Astarita’s Family
In memory of Marie Astarita, her children would like to honor a member of the Eastchester High School
Athletic Community who exemplifies strong character and good citizenship.
Marie died at the age of 87. Widowed at the age of 36, her focus was the three children she raised on her own. She wanted to be an involved parent and helped organize the Eastchester Sports Booster Club (later renamed the Eastchester Sports Club) in 1969. The Booster Club was originally formed to raise money for Coach Cecere’s 1970 baseball team’s trip to Puerto Rico. Marie served on the Executive Board as Secretary for several years.
Her children were members of the Sports Club and her grandchildren participated in the EHS Sports program as well.
