ROBERT “BOB” HAINDL SCHOLARSHIP
Presented by Eastchester Eagles Sports Club
Robert “Bob” Haindl was born on May 5, 1937. As a student in Eastchester High School, Bob distinguished himself as an S.W.I.A.C. All-League player in three sports: football, basketball and track, an outstanding accomplishment. He proved strong student leadership as captain of both the track and football teams and was invited to participate in Coach Carl Sorenson's S.W.I.A.C. county championship basketball team in 1955.
After graduating from high school, Bob joined the U.S. Marine Corps serving 3 1⁄2 years of active duty. After discharge from the Marines, Bob returned to Eastchester where he married and raised his family and began working at the Schindler Elevator Company.
The name Bob Haindl is synonymous with Eastchester youth sports. Bob was an active volunteer in the Eastchester’s Little League, Eastchester Baseball League/Pony Colt League, Eastchester Basketball League and the Blue Devils Pop Warner Football Program. His passion for sports and his respect and concern for the athletes he trained, supported and umpired made a huge impression on those he worked with.
Bob lost his battle with cancer in December 1991. In April 1993, Eastchester’s Recreation Park was renamed Haindl Field in memory of Bob. Bob’s lifelong commitment to youth sports and his inspiration to athletes are remembered with deep appreciation.
This scholarship is presented by the Sports Club in Bob’s memory to athletes who have shown inspiration and dedication.
JERRY CESARINI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Presented by Eastchester Eagles Sports Club
If one thinks of sports in Eastchester, one thinks of Jerry Cesarini. An Eastchester resident for 40 years, Jerry believed that the experience of sports helps nurture and instruct children in the intricacies of life. Jerry remained deeply involved in all aspects of town and school sports. He and his wife, Ginger, raised three children in town and cheered them on as they participated in Blue Devils, Pony Colt, cheerleading and school sports.
His 10 grandchildren participate in town and school sports and each tries to follow their Papa’s teaching: “Good sportsmanship means responsibility, respect for the opposition and respect for yourself.” Jerry believed that sportsmanship combines the love of competition, the value of trying one’s best, and the ability to win and lose graciously.
This scholarship is presented by the Sports Club in Jerry’s memory to athletes who have shown good sportsmanship and the love of competition.
