Everything is a rose garden starting out. It is perfect, at least in
the beginning. “The kissing had us so close we couldn’t see the
wart on the other person’s nose.”
It’s interesting to note that some dictionaries say romance is ‘an
illusion’ — not ‘reality.’ An illusion is defined as, “A false idea,
that appears to be real, but lacks a foundation in fact.” This is
where most of us start: building on a faulty foundation— like
building on shifting sand. Jesus spoke of the Rock vs. the sand.
The Rock is him and his gospel truth. The sand is anything else we
tend to believe, like preachers, peers, and even our opinions.
DISILLUSIONMENT. After romance is disillusionment. We know
the honeymoon is now over, whether marriage, sex, business, etc.
Now we’ve stepped back so we can see the wart. Things are not
as we had expected or hoped. We often don’t realize what a
killer expectancy is.
Like romance, disillusionment can also be looked at in a little
different way. It is usually viewed negatively, but it can also be
seen positively. Used in the context of romance, it can be
defined as, “Being FREE from a false idea that appeared to be
real.”
CHOICE. In law, I handled litigation and divorce, and noticed
something about most people. Most folks don’t make proper
choices. Thus they are not in control, but are instead controlled.
We’ve seen this to a degree. You are only in control when you
reach the ‘choice’ stage of life.
