People are encouraged to move closer together so the distance
from home to work or school would decrease. The best way
to ensure sustainable transport is reduce the distance one
needs to cover. This may seem logical but requires extensive
changes. Linear settlements in Flanders have shown dramatic
consequences on the environment and on traffi c.

Residential areas will be strengthened, to reduce the.
distance we need to cover every day. By ensuring that
these areas have suffi cient access to basic (schools,
hospitals, local government offi ces, shops, …) and
recreational (theatres, event spaces, cultural centres, …)
amenities, more people will be convinced to live in them.

Vehicle sharing systems are to be further promoted. If you
still need a car to go somewhere, it doesn’t have to be your
private car. There is a wide variety of ridesharing platforms,
but they are often inaccessible the technological gap, the
cost, or even the lack of familiarity among a wider audience.
Private cars stand still more than 90% of the time and only
one seat is occupied most of the time. The number of cars
can be greatly reduced by further promoting ridesharing
                              and encouraging carpooling.
