Fragments
A fragment is any group of words that is punctuated like a sentence but cannot stand alone because it is only
a part of a sentence; it is not a complete thought and does not make complete sense by itself. A fragment may
be a phrase or a dependent clause or any group of words.
Correcting Fragments
In editing your writing, the easiest way to correct a fragment is to reconnect it to the sentence or sentence part
from which is has been separated. If the fragment is a dependent clause, then connect it to an independent
clause. If the fragment is a phrase, give it what it needs.
Practice 8E: Sentence or Fragment? Mark S for sentence; mark FRAG for fragment. If it is a fragment,
make it a complete sentence by adding enough words to make it a complete thought.
Example: When I completed the test. FRAG When I completed the test, I turned it in to the teacher.
