For words ending in y preceded by a consonant, change the y to i before all suffixes except those beginning with
i.
• Suffixes not beginning with i: try, tried; busy, busily; accompany, accompanied
• Suffixes beginning with i: try, trying; busy, busying; accompany, accompanying
• Final y preceded by vowel: turkey, turkeys; employ, employs

When adding a suffix to a word ending in silent e, keep the e if the suffix begins with a consonant, but drop the e
if the suffix begins with a vowel.
• Suffix beginning with consonant (-ment, -ly, etc.): arrangement, completely, likely
• Suffix beginning with vowel (-ing, -able, -ed, etc.): arranging, completing, liking
