6. Sets a bad example.
A preacher is a role model to his congregation. A pastor that says,
“Do as I do,” will motivate others to follow. But the pastor who tells
everyone else what to do, but does not apply it personally, is a lousy
pastor. The attitude that a preacher possesses, his manner of life, his
philosophy and beliefs, and his habits create a model that
congregation follow.

In 8 grade I had a teacher who was an alcoholic. He would come to
class on occasion and be drunk. He had to be taking a “swig” outside the classroom. We could always
tell when he had too many drinks because his hair was all messy and he could not stand on his feet very
well, so he sat at his desk. He certainly was not a role model to the class. In fact, we all felt sorry for
him. He set a terrible example of a teacher to our class.
The preacher announces that the church will start a new visitation program, but does not show up, is a
lousy pastor. The pastor who tells everyone that they need to win souls, but never shares the Gospel
with others is also a lousy pastor.
What kind of poor habits do you have as a preacher? Are you controlled by some substance or bound to
some addiction? Remember this verse from the Bible:
Luke 6:40 A disciple (student) is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like
his teacher.
Do you want your congregation to become just like you? A lousy preacher could care less. A lousy
preacher does not even try to be a role model. He is too self-absorbed to care.
This section on becoming a lousy preacher is a negative approach to what we DO NOT want you to
become. But we wanted you to see that certain attitudes and behaviors will be detrimental to you as
you try to work toward becoming a great preacher. Remember these negative traits, and avoid them!
