So, you had better learn how to cite another person’s information in your paper. Let’s learn how….
Footnoting and citing your references.
In your research you will find information or ideas presented by various authors. You may want to include that
information in your research paper. You may include it by directly copying the very words of the author and
inserting them in your paper or by just borrowing his idea or ideas. Either way, you MUST acknowledge the author
by footnoting the source of your information. At AIU, we follow a format created by Kate L. Turabian and
associates.

This method of recording references is one of the most used methods of citation
in the universities worldwide because of its consistent upgrading by credible and
renowned authors. It portrays the “comprehensive guidelines for proper paper
format, as recommended by dissertation offices nationwide” (Turabian, MW:
Back Cover Page). Further, it expresses the “authoritative advice on all matters
of style, updated to reflect the Chicago Manual Style, fifteenth edition”
(Turabian, MW: Back Cover Page).
Situations Entailing Citations (Turabian, Mw, 134).
1. When you quote exact words from a source
2. When you paraphrase ideas that are associated with a specific source, or even if you don’t quote exact
words from it
3. When you use any idea, data, or method attributable to any source you consulted
Turabian Style was developed especially for students by Kate Turabian, the dissertation secretary at the University
of Chicago, and based on the Chicago style of writing. Turabian Style is used mainly for history papers, but it is
sometimes used in other disciplines. We use it for all research papers presented at Ambassador International
University.
Turabian Style suggests that writers use footnote references to cite sources. A professor may also require a
bibliography page. You should indicate sources for quotations (exact words) and paraphrases (ideas stated in your
words) in your writing. A superscript numeral in the text indicates the use of an outside source; the corresponding
footnote at the bottom of the page provides the source’s complete publication information.

Below is a list of some of the most commonly used citation categories and examples of what information should be
included in that citation, as well as how the information should be arranged. When you need to cite a source,
follow these steps:
1. Decide to which category your source belongs. Is it a book? Anthology? Online source? Journal article?
Etc.?
2. Collect the necessary information from your source. Sometimes this takes a bit of digging, especially
with the online sources.
3. Arrange the vital information exactly as it appears in the examples, including all styles and
punctuation.
