Although writing from research usually takes more time than writing essays based on information with which you
are already familiar, both processes are similar. The primary difference in doing research is that you are required to
develop a subject based on outside sources and information and reference them properly.
We have to learn to work outside of our academic comfort zone ”. A comfort zone is the level at which a person
functions with ease and familiarity We have to learn to be “uncomfortable” for a time in order to learn new things
and gain new skills.
Your Role as a Researcher (By Leland Graham and Isabelle McCoy (Graham & McCoy, HWGRP, 7))
Your role is to “investigate, examine, clarify, and defend your subject.”
What Does the Word of God say?
“Do not be anxious about anything but in every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your
requests to God” (Phil 4:6).
PP (Phil 4:1-3); unification of believers in disharmony
IP (Phil 4:4-6); One of the solutions for the combat of disharmony
Exultation in the Lord
Presentation of our request to God
Results; we will be guarded by the peace of God.
FP (Phil 4:8-9); Realization of PP and IP: dwelling on things worthy of praise.
Key: PP=Preceding Passage; IP=Immediate Passage; FP=Following Passage
This may all be new to you, but trust in God and not your own understanding. You are limited; He is not.
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up
according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” (Eph 4:29).
Our overriding goal for not letting any unwholesome word to proceed out of our mouths should be edification.

“ I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me
personally. My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full

riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ in whom are

hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding
arguments” (Col 2:1-4).
Everything you research has to be evaluated for accuracy through the lens of the Word of God. Do not just look for
information that agrees with you (and what you already think) – make sure it agrees with God’s Word.
“ If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Each one should test their

own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else,” (Gal
6:3-4).

“ Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other” (Gal 5:26).
We will NOT compare work in this course. Each of you are individuals and each will do his own work for the glory of
God. We are all at different starting points, and since the length of our journey is the same, we won’t all end up at
the same point when the course is over. Encourage one another and boast in Christ alone!
Whatever you research, whatever you write, let it all be for God’s glory and done with Christ as your focus.
