I. ANALYSIS PROCEDURE
In order to properly appraise this work of art the following three criteria were met:
1. Expertise and analysis of the Oil Painting.
- Distinction of the artist: Carle Van Loo’s artwork is part of an eclectic trend
th
of the 18 Century.
- Dimensions, techniques and analysis of the oil painting: we obtained
information from direct observation.
- Composition and date of completion: the composition corresponds to a
th
generalized trend from the beginning of the 18 Century
This period is prolific in paintings that though having naturalistic elements,
are imaginary, so, it’s not an outdoor cavalletti (plein-air) painting but
instead was produced inside the artist’s studio. The painting is very typical
of the transitional period between the Neoclassical and the Romantic. Carle
Van Loo’s patron was none other than Luis XV, in whose court he was held
in such high regard that he was named First Painter to the king.
- State of Conservation of the Oil Painting: Perfect, albeit with traces of
chromatic fading due to the passage of time.
2. External Factors
The quality of elaboration of the Original Oil Painting is remarkable and
corresponds to the prestige of the painter. Carle Van Loo is the most
recognized painter in his dynasty; which is why his works are found in the
Versailles Palace Collection and the Louvre Museum in Paris.
The appraisal must be made taking into consideration not only the uniqueness
of the piece, but also the epoch or period to which it corresponds.
3. The taking into account of the commercial value and historical assessment of
the Oil Painting and its school, highly prized in the international markets as
well as in galleries, museums and of course by its current owner.
