II. APPRAISAL TECHNIQUES
This appraisal is based on two assumptions:
1. The Oil Painting’s age and authenticity are backed by expert analysis, its
current state of preservation and its artistic and historical context.
2. Value and Commercial Projection: The Oil Painting has great cultural and
historical significance according to the attached reports.
III. NOTES FROM THE REPORT
1. This entire process of analysis and appraisal is made under the assumption of
legal ownership by the requestor.
2. This analysis assumes that the owners’ claim of authenticity is accurate and
also that its acquisition and purchase was in fact legal.
3. In agreement with the opinion certified by the seller Evelyn S. Poole, Ltd.
Antiques Gallery, represented by Anne Louise Driver. Managing Director; it’s
established that the title of the studio Oil Painting by Carle Van Loo is Saint
George, Patron of England, Slaying the Dragon, name which is deeply rooted in
the academic and commercial record, before being acquired by its current
owner.
Without questioning or contradicting what is claimed by the Gallery and aiming
to strengthen what is certified, we recall that in the iconography related to the
first Christian centuries, a very original symbolism was often used; consisting of
mixing in a representation the mythological figure of Saint Michael or other
Archangels with the one of saints or martyrs from the first Christian centuries.
That is the case of the representation of Saint Gregory and the specific case in
point of Saint George who was often depicted on his horse, dressed as a
warrior and armed with a spear.
