History Committee Report
Michael Leonard
CUA Historian
Ottawa, ON
significant development since autumn was the flooding of the CUA Corporate Office, which involved the History
ARoom. This occurred just before the Winter Board meeting in late January. Dr. Jerzy Gajewski and myself were planning
to meet in advance of the Winter Board meeting as a handover. Instead we went to the office to review items in the
history collection, and fortunately none were damaged by the flood. My plan will be to re-organize the room and continue
to catalogue newly received items and digitize documents that are considered historically relevant to our association.
However, a more significant development has stepped in to influence all of our lives - the COVID-19 pandemic. This has led
to unprecedented challenges and resulted in the cancellation of our 75 Anniversary Annual Meeting in Victoria, BC. Of
th
interest, this will not be the first time a CUA meeting was cancelled. The Annual Meeting in 1968 was to be in Bermuda, but
was cancelled due to a hurricane! Now as we work from home and/or practice physical distancing, we can still celebrate
our 75 . If you haven’t done so already, I would draw your attention to the Member Monday Seminal Moments history link.
th
The CUAJ is also featuring history articles this year in honour of our 75 . These interesting reads bring into focus the legacy
th
of Canadian urology, and I would recommend them to all CUA members. COVID-19 seems the biggest threat to those of
us over 60 years of age. When it comes to organizations though, age is our strength. The 75 year-old CUA has the resources
and acumen to come through this challenge in good form. We will look forward to celebrating the CUA’s 76 anniversary in
th
Niagara Falls in 2021.
