function well (obviously my presence is not always essential). We have even won some new business, renewed several key contracts, and have a healthy pipeline of opportunities progressed to the point of customer decisions.
On the home front, after watching every episode of Tiger King on Netflix in the month of March, I also realized I needed to do something more productive in my free time – and recently have taken to exercise (I’m still overweight due to too much non-essential nutrition), reading, and shooting at the gun range with my three sons (because America).
Looking back at the early days of the pandemic, I can see I wasted a lot of time on non-essential activities that did not contribute to making me a better CEO, a better person, or improving my family life. What I realize now is that doing less and having less is making me happier and more effective.
The less time wasted on “non-essential” activities allows more time to focus on what is truly essential in making us all more effective at work and more fulfilled our personal lives. What is non-essential in your life that you can reduce or eliminate for good?
FOCUSING ON THE BARE ESSENTIALS BY KEVIN MCKENNA, CEO
E ver since the pandemic was thrust onto us in March, we have all heard the term “essential business” and “essential employees” – and I am thankful to say that we have from the onset, qualified as an essential business, and each
and every one of you is an essential employee continuing to serve our customers. It is a source of relief for me that we can continue to work and earn money for our employees (your paycheck and benefits) and continue increasing the value of the business for our shareholders. Moreover, it gives me great pride knowing that we have continued to help our customers stop bad actors from threatening the integrity of products and commerce that could otherwise introduce even more harm and chaos in what already has been a pretty bad year by many measures.
I have also gained a new appreciation for what is truly essential from both a personal and business perspective. I have slept at home in my own bed more this year than in the last 28 years – I had grown accustomed to and accepted that constant travel was essential to my role and that certain functions must be done in person. Weekends were there to afford me the opportunity to catch up on work and/or get a head start on traveling to another country. Over six months later with no work travel, our business has continued to
