Reviewing A Lesson Can Be Fun
Erna Hamidah
SMP Negeri 51 Bandung
Introduction
Szafir and Mutlu (2013) describe reviewing material or lesson as an effective teaching strategy that can augment learning. Pesce (n.d.) mention that review lessons are very important and often a wonderful opportunity to consolidate everything your students have learned. But as a matter of fact, we often find that they are usually very monotonous and teacher dominated whereas good review are not teacher dominated. Rather, they allow students to demonstrate what they learned and what they remember (Henrichsen, Smith, & Baker, 1997). Hence, a review lesson should be students dominated where every students get opportunity to show their learning.
I assume that in most Indonesian typical English classroom, including my own seventh grade classroom, we often saw there were only a small number of students who were willing to engage themselves during English learning and even sometimes teacher had to force or even begged them to do our planned activity while the rest of students pulled themselves from the crowd.
Seventh grader student whose age are 11 to 12 years old which can be categorized as preadolescence or early adolescence tend to have passionate commitment to things which interest them (Harmer, 2007) and the writer believes that game is one of thing that may become their interest. The game that the writer intended is not a time filler or fun game but it is a game which aimed on learning.
Based on that notion, the writer decide to make an attempt to use game based reviewing lesson strategy for class VII-2 of SMPN 51 on asking and giving information material to find out whether it can enhance students' participation and motivation on English learning. Because the desired game on that particular topic is not available, then the writer decide to create it by adapting or modifying it from other game.
Implementation
Reviewing lesson may take place as starter or closure of the lesson. Here, the writer apply it as the starter. Therefore, it means that students have learned the material on previous meeting and going to be reviewed on the following meeting. The sequences are as follow:
1. State the objective of the activity clearly.
Tell students that they are going to have a lesson review on asking and giving information in two term
