Roles and Responsibilities
Teams need roles and rules. Teams need clarity on what each team member does and the expectations for behaviour and interaction. An effective leader engages the team members in establishing these at the outset.
Team Leader
The Team Leader is the person responsible for focusing and leading the team towards successfully meeting the established goal. The leader engages everyone in contributing and creates an environment of safety, inclusion and excellence.
Responsibilities of the Team Leader:
• Participate as a member of the Team, not as a boss.
• Support and coordinate the work of the team ensuring focus on doing the right thing. Leaders who take on a dominant role alienate members and shut down the open communication flow which is critical to the Team’s success.
• Schedule team meetings; helps people prepare for them; and follows up on assigned tasks.
• Act as the communication link between other key roles and teams.
• Assume the greatest responsibility for the actions of the Team in delivering the expected results. An important consideration is for the Leader to use participative techniques.
Presenter
During team meetings, the Presenter
documents all discussions, action plans
and recommended solutions. This role may be selected by the team members and it is a good practice to rotate this role among the team.
Responsibilities of the Presenter:
• Record team discussions in a clear and concise manner. This can be a challenge as the Presenter also participates in the discussions.
• Review what the team has discussed and what was agreed on before the meeting breaks to ensure that there is consensus in the team.
• Remain objective at all times. Personal biases may influence the way the minutes are written, and hence, change the meaning of the written words. The Presenter reviews all minutes, prior to finalizing, with the Team Leader.
• Act as back up to the Team Leader in times of absence. The Presenter acts as Co-Leader in many respects.
