When Should Pareto Diagrams be Used
• To show priority problems indicated by the data. They focus attention and effort on priority problems in a rational and systematic manner.
• For communicating clearly and powerfully the importance of working on certain problems by displaying visually what cannot be expressed as well in words.
• Tracking progress and documenting improvement by comparing changes and data from one time period to another or from one operation to another. A before and after Pareto diagram shows the improvement of each item as actions are taken.
• Reinforcing a cause and effect diagram. After using a Pareto diagram to identify the major cause of a problem, you can treat that major cause as the effect for the revised fish bone diagram. Once the cause and effect diagram is completed, you are ready for a second Pareto illustration to provide data about which causes contributed most to the original effect.
• Demonstrating the cumulative effect of additional causes in contributing to the overall problem. It becomes clear what set of problems account for most of a particular problem.
