 TIPS
Tips for Constructing an Effective Pareto Diagram
P Remember to label the axis and to title the graph.
P Use the cumulative lines to see what causes are contributing most
significantly to the problem.
P Make sure that the most frequent problem is the furthest left column, the next most frequent problem is the second from the left with each column shorter than the one to its left.
P Use common sense: the most frequent or most costly events are not always the most important.
Flow Charts
Flow charts map the common-sense steps you would follow in carrying out a process. With ISO 9000 requiring processes to be defined, everyone should be able to ‘map’ their own process. By studying flow diagrams you can often uncover activities that are sources of potential problems.
Flow charts can be applied to anything from a flow of information within a process, to the steps necessary to making a client presentation. The flow chart is widely used in problem identification and is most effective when people with the greatest amount of knowledge about the process develop the illustration.
A Flow Chart Helps To:
• Develop a common understanding of a process
• Identify all the steps in a process
• Identify unnecessary steps in a current process
• Find missing steps in the process
• Find inefficiencies in the process flow
• Look in more detail at the current methods being used in each part of
the process
• Communicate with impact
